Thumbed down under "stalking" and "stalkers."

Or do I thumb it up if this site positively regards those things?

Wow... I really don't like the "beta" StumbleUpon randomly thrust in my path tonight. Ugly, difficult to navigate, and an incredibly bad layout that makes the worst possible use of screen space, once it actually starts using it halfway down the page. Here's hoping it never gets implemented.
Dragon Power Station

An interesting power application that would employ overhead road traffic to hydraulically power a generator.

To the people thumbing this down because the energy is "stolen" from the passing vehicles - seriously? Have you thought this through? You lose much more energy when you're forced to brake and accelerate over a speed bump. It needn't be any worse than a smooth dip in the road to work. And just one station is expected to power 1750 homes - homes that wouldn't be powered by, say, coal. Give a little, get a lot. It's not like people are going to stop driving in mass quantities any time soon.

Think of the zillions of places where energy -needs- to be stolen anyway, to be expended as useless brake heat - steep hills, toll gates, stop signs. Why not put a fraction of that into this instead.
Technology Review: Where Are They?

A well-written article on the possibility of life on other planets, and its implications for us. A somewhat depressing read, too, until you examine how much the author presupposes, based solely on extreme extrapolation of our own single history and evolution. Still, lots of interesting points here, whether or not you give credit to the "Great Filter."

Dang... I use about 3.2 earthz, time to find smaller shoes.

Take this quiz! It's quick, easy, and sort of alarming!

A good article on the potential of thermal solar power, from the former US undersecretary of energy, Joseph Romm. Some surprising info on how efficient it is becoming... I had no idea heat was much more efficient to store than electricity, but I think that is only in the short term.

"The Bush administration said yesterday that it plans to start using the nation's most advanced spy technology for domestic purposes soon, rebuffing challenges by House Democrats over the idea's legal authority."

"'I think we've fully addressed anybody's concerns,' Chertoff added in remarks last week to bloggers. 'I think the way is now clear to stand it up and go warm on it.'"

Wonderful.

A blog with good advice for twenty-somethings on both saving a few bucks and not being wasteful with the things you have. It hits pretty much every topic, and balances being both well-researched and full of personal insight and humor. I liked this line from "Frankenstein's Deodorant," obvious as it may be:

"Often we stress ourselves out trying to bring in more money without considering that if we found more ways to hang onto our money in the first place, we might not feel the crunch so acutely."
